sounds like the cons were biting his eyes causing them to be infetecd or swell up and make you think "hmm something dosnt look right" and then as time progressed in typical aggressive cichlid manner, they made theyre attack, and being greedy if they took the eye out they most likely ate it. ive had popeye on severums before and it cures itself if you do lots of water changes and make the water quality better. thats just my opinion though, we may never know as there isnt currently a CSI: Fish

SOUNDS LIKE POP EYE GONE BAD /I WOULD GET SOME FUNGUS PILLS /WHEN MY FISH HAD POP EYE THATS WAT I USED TO GET RID OF IT / BUT FOR THAT FISH ITS TOO LATE/ BUT SO THAT IT DOESNT HAPPEN TO THE OTHER FISH I WOULD TREAT THE TANK
it is likely an infection from running into something in the tank, I'd just separate from the cons (give it a bigger tank perhaps) and keep up some massive water changes

Iridescent sharks are really susceptible to popeye... after he got popeye the cons of the pleco could easily have bit them...
also, i imagine you don't plan to keep him in the 55 for life, right?
