how is everyone keeping their tank water clear?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
cycle it and double the recommended filtration. Then change 25 % of the water 2X a week. That works on my tanks. Every tank but my new 55 which is cycling and gets cloudy and all that usual ****

all the tanks i have had always had more filtration than needed. I aim for tank size X 7 =gph. ie. my 175 X 7 =1225gph. Plus i filled my sump with bio balls and just added filter socks.

But bitter was in someones thread yesterday doing the same thing. And they had just lost all of their fish. Saying the one oscar killed everything in the 100 gallon tank cause they are too dirty.

But to the OP of this thread, filtration is key. Oscars are dirty fish, they need a lot of filtration.

I was thinking the exact same thing...

Lots of water changes and mechanical filtration is the key to clear water.

hey everyone the water in my tank is reallly merky right now and i can barely see the other side:nilly: i just added my second eheim pro II 2028 today. i was wondering how everyone is keeping their tank water crystal clear... thanks

Every filter, I think has a place and specific purpose. Eheims are excellent and second to none, as far as biological filtration goes. They however, *can not* be used as the only source of your mechanical filtration, specifically when it comes to large, waste producing fish.

What sort of mechanical filtration do you have? I have always had huge success in keeping water very clear, by using aquaclear mechanical filters, and adding poly-fil in it as means of polishing the water. The ACs are also relatively easier to clean, compared to eheims, on a weekly basis.

I would therefore recommend, if you haven't done already, to have a AC set up for the tank (i.e., if you do have some funds for the filtration, since you've added two eheim pros :) ), or maybe two -- depending on how large the tank is.

Another solution is FX5. I am currently using it as mech-only filter for my 125, while the bio filtration is done using an eheim 2260. FX5 is an excellent choice if you are picky about the noise filters make -- ACs would definitely be noisier compared to FX5.

Hope that helps!

It could be from too much light also.
pardon my ignorance, but how does light affect the tank water to be clear.

And AC's are very quiet filters.

Algae blooms.
