How is your electical setup in your fishroom?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I ran six different outlets to my fishroom in the basement, they are on two different breakers too. I have plenty of power for my needs. Well, at least for now.

If you are blowing fuses then you definitely need another line ran.
But if you don't know what you are doing you need to hire an electrician.

Better to be safe than sorry when it comes to electricity.

The one going to the snake/fish room runs the three rooms in the house that use the most electricity- living room, bathroom (my wife with her hair dryer, straightener, lights, and heater for when she's showering are just about killing me!), and snake room, are all on the same 20 amp line.
Wow! Must have been built under old codes. These days the bathroom alone needs it's own dedicated 20amp service.

For a short term solution, put some hooks in the ceiling and get those cords off the floor ;) That's as far as I've gotten...

My long term plan is to add two circuits to my box for fishroom use only... Use PVC as conduit attached to the wall near the ceiling circling the entire fishroom... outlets placed in that PVC pipe where needed... a line coming down from this PVC pipe near the door for switches... One switch will override the light's timer (in case I need to turn the lights on after the timer has turned them off), one switch will operate about 1/3 of the outlets (I turn off several pumps while doing water changes, these pumps will be on switch operated outlets)...

Also, it'll be a lot cheaper to put a GFCI circuit breaker in the box than to buy GFCI for every outlet.

My father is an electrician and helped me conceptualize my ideas. He knows the technicalities so I may have failed to mention some details that will make that all work. But your girl's father should be able to fill in those holes and make alterations that work better for your particular situation.

wierd you bring this up cam. i was laying in bed last night thinkin of how many wires i have in my bedroom/fishroom. i actually ran out of recepticles in my room. as soon as i start my wall build im gonna run my own box dedicated to my aquariums.

GFCI outlets are made with provisions for protecting other outlets downline. So you will only need to buy one if ya plan the wiring for this. This is much cheaper then a GFCI breaker.

Two tanks running on two different 20 ampere circuits. Staged lighting (one light at a time) as to not add strain to the electrical or lighting equipment. Ive seen some real screw ups with people wiring there tanks and leaving a power strip right under their HOB filter lol

One thing not mentioned yet is putting the air pumps on a separate circuit in case a fuse blows on a circuit with water pumps. If you´re running both air and water pumps on the same circuit you don´t have any backup if a fuse blows. That´s why I like to have multiple circuits running on all tanks.
