How large should my tank be for a Bamboo juv?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
really? but when i visited aquariums they do keep sharks with angels...
they seem fine together

It depends on the type of shark. As well as the species of Angel

Benthic(bottom dwelling) species of sharks -like Bamboos, Epaulettes, Horn & Coral catsharks are usually picked on by many aggressive species of Angels.

Most active swimming sharks aren't usually picked on by Angels, neither are the large benthic species like Nurse or the Wobbegongs. As these species of shark tend to be more aggressive, and most are capable of eating the Angels. Note these are the species of sharks you usually see in Public Aquariums.

Also it could be a fact of territorial behavior on the Angels part. Which they usually don't display in large Public Aquariums.

But the generally rule of thumb - Don't mix Angels with shark - especialy the "Home Aquaria species", i.e. Bamboos, Epaulettes, Horn & Coral Cats.

That depends on a few different variables. How warm your tank is temperature wise, how often you feed it, and how larger your feeding portions are. A healthy pup should be fed as much as the shark is willing to eat. I would try to feed it atleast once a day, if it doesn't take it then it doesn't take it. Depending on the current size of your Bamboo right now, it should grow about an Inch a moth for the first couple of months approx.

Yeah - bamboo sharks are known to grow about an 1" per month, for the first several months. And generally average about 6-8" per year until maturity.

But that naturally it mostly depends on how much it's being feed, how often it's being feed and the water temperature it's kept at.

another question:
how fast would my shark grow?

Did you hatch this guy yourself ???? I've hatched about 6 of these in the last 10 years and have never had one live/grow larger than 12". I've had terrible luck with these guys growing up. They never seem to last longer than 6-8 months. I've even tried raising two of them in my 260 reef tank......No dice. Good luck and keep us posted.

The big thing about newly hatched sharks is getting them to feed. And eat regular basis.

Which is the main reason that people tend to lose a lot of newly hatched shark pups.

Glad to hear your shark's growing - but how well is it eating?

well.....im only feeding it squid and shrimp at the moment...both dead....
i use tweezers to place the squid/shrimp near the shark and it will eat it....
if i just put them in the tank the shark couldn't spot the squid/shrimp
