I unexpectedly found a rainbowfish fry in my QT tank when I set it up in December. Egg probably was on sponge filter that I moved over.

I go out if town a lot but my mother feeds it.

I was wondering how old until I can leave him for a few days without food or when he can eat regular food with other fish (I eventually plan to move him in this QT tank with rummynose tetra and dwarf neons until he's big enough for big tank).

If I can leave him with no food by late October (10 months old I guess), then my mother can come on a trip with me then.

Right now I feed the tank a pinch of NLS fry starter 3-4 times a day. He's only fish in 10g.

Thanks for any info.

It's flexible. Quick Vegas trip probably. Leave Sunday night. Come back Wed morning or Thursday morning.

If it puts fish at risk, I can just not do it. Don't want to raise a fish for 10 months and then have it die.

Long story is I have to burn up these miles expiring on Thursday. Could use to bring my mom with me,or just burn it for myself if it puts fish at risk. They are garbage Frontier miles but still with like $40-70

I can book as far ahead as first week.Nov with miles now. No further.

By October the Rainbow fish should be ok for that time. Just feed well before you leave.

I think it would depend on the tank. I see your tank was only setup in December, meaning it is not well established yet, so chances are the fish don't have much to survive on while left unattended.

If it were an old tank, the fish can feed on all sorts of tiny micro-organisms that have established themselves in time. I put a beta fish recently enough in a tub that has been running for 5 years. I see him constantly picking on invisible stuff, looking highly entertained catching them...not sure what he's after but he's finding snacks for sure.

How big is he in comparison to your fish in the bigger tank? I have put tiny fish in big tanks and they've done even better, survived the bigger fish and thrived. Small fish are normally fast as rockets. They're a hard catch by lazy fish used to food falling from the sky :)...providing the tank is big enough and has hiding spots.

Thanks for the response.

On Sunday, I had to move the fry to the other 10g tank that has 11 rummynose tetra and 5 praecox rainbows (I had to move a female Praecox to the fry tank for an epson salt treatment thread:

You have a good point about an established tank having stuff for a fry to much on. I hadn't really seen the fry well as there's no light in the bottom tank he was in. I could only see from room lights or the from the light from the tank above it (no substrate on either tank).

When I put him in Sunday, I thought he looked really skinny but I also haven't watched any fry before so I wasn't sure if this was normal.

I got back this morning (Friday) and it appears the fry is doing well with these other fish. He's only slightly smaller than the smallest rummynose tetra. I see him picking at algae on the Whisper HOB intake and sometimes off the intake sponge. I'm feeding NLS fry starter and also feeding NLS Grow for the other fish. I swear the fry looks healthier after these 5 days with the other fish. He no longer looks too skinny. I think he's getting more food this way (from the stuff growing in the tank, and maybe bits of the other fishes food that they don't eat).
