Hi,

Just curious, how long can bacteria live during power outages.
only 2 of my tanks have ACDC pump connected to sponge filters, Planning to get some more for my other tanks, but planning to only connect airstones instead of sponge? Also i have sumps for filters, but wondering how long can Bacteria live in sump? Can it take 10 hour power outages?

how about canister filters? 2 of my tanks have canister filters

thanks.

Beneficial bacterial will begin to die off almost immediately. I would say about 6 hours or so.

I went for 4 days and my stats were fine.

Of course maybe 5 times I cycled the water through the Fx5 using the drain valve.

Remember you have bacteria in the tank too in and on everything.

I heard it happens quickly in Canisters due to lack of oxygen. And I cant really purge them. They are the back bone of all my bio filtration (Eheims with substrat and substrate pro.) I have been considering a back up device like this

Last winter we had a outage that lasted 10days.

I started to get ammonia in the tank after about 36hrs on a lightly stacked 75g. I then started removing water by the bucket full and cycling it thru my filters every 8 hrs. And after 10 days I had to recycle all tanks.

So i would say with in 24hrs if you have no water movement you will have problems.

I lost over a grand in fish during that outage.

A generator is worth its weight in gold during a time like that. And i have one now.

Oh my god............. that is a HUMUNGOUS loss

let oxygen get to the media and keep it damp with tank water and the bb will last for days even weeks canisters should be opened
