how long can bio media be "out of water"?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I wouldn't recomend going any longer than you have to...about 20 minute max...It would be a LOT better if you could recirculate the water in the sump over the bio-media with the return pump.

After that amount of time the BB start to die off although it takes a lot longer to knock them all off. Just put a small pump with a hunk of hose in the somp and feed the bio-media with the hose....not complicated at all

i have media in 2 different filters for one tank.
but good idea on pump ;)

anyone else? how long do you leave your media out of water in your w/d?

"Out of water"? 10 seconds to transfer, but never left out of water.

Wolf3101 has the right idea.

Last resort, put it in a container and add/change water with old tank water every 20 minutes during the W/C's.

Once the bacteria start dying off it kills the other bacteria and exponentially gets worse and may be uncorrectable.

Which filter is the in?

Wow u guys think the bb dies within minutes or evan seconds from being removed from the water i am sure i have killed my bb many times over i wonder why there has never been a negative effect from this on my tanks? I use hob's with scrubbies in them for bio media when i do filter mantainece i usualy empty the scrubbies into a 5gal bucket and rub them together in wc waste water to unclog them. Then i take apart the filter and hose out the inside and put the clean scrubbies back in the filter and it all just sits on the table for oh say a hour while i do several more filters the same way i have had no problems yet.I have been doing filter maintenace this way for a year now ever since i learned of scrubbies here at mfk.

thats what i was thinking big train.lol

joe, this is all on the 240
all my other filters the media is underwater all the time.
but on the 240 it actually has 2 wet "dry" parts.

when i did work on it last time.
i was curious on this
so i looked at the bio balls about an hour into the water change.
the bio balls were still wet so i figured all was good.

still curious how others with w/d do this?
or will they not speak up now cus they do it like i did.lol

I just shut the pump off and let the sump fill up to the point where all the media is covered before I start to pull water out of the tank.

This is also how I test to see if my sump can handle the volume if the power goes out. I also have a battery backup air pump in the sump that switches on when the pump goes off

I either leave the sump fill to cover the media.Or i have a small bowl at the tank and just dump water of it every so often.
