how long can bio media be "out of water"?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
every setup is different.lol
im talking about the w/d that the media is out of water all the time.
the above the sump setups.
i cant be the only one with an old style setup :grinno:

wolfs idea sounds good tho.
in my case i guess i will pump sump water up to my pre filter then it will flow through all my media back to the sump.

glad i asked tho cus ive done a few w/c and they take about 2 hrs

i will post pics of my invention once i do it.lol

What about a simple T in the water return pipe from the pump. Put a valve on that and a pipe back to the inlet side of the filter.

Open that valve and the water will just re-circulate in the filter. You may have to have 2 valves to prevent a syphon occuring, but I'm guessing you will have one in that line to prevent that anyway?

Wow u guys think the bb dies within minutes or evan seconds from being removed from the water i am sure i have killed my bb many times over i wonder why there has never been a negative effect from this on my tanks? I use hob's with scrubbies in them for bio media when i do filter mantainece i usualy empty the scrubbies into a 5gal bucket and rub them together in wc waste water to unclog them. Then i take apart the filter and hose out the inside and put the clean scrubbies back in the filter and it all just sits on the table for oh say a hour while i do several more filters the same way i have had no problems yet.I have been doing filter maintenace this way for a year now ever since i learned of scrubbies here at mfk.

It's not what we think big train, it's scientific fact we're dealing with here. Just like 6 out of ten people will be in a car accident this year and you may not know a single person who gets in one, and midnight may know 5. You have just been lucky. Are your tanks bare bottom?
