how long can fish survive w/o food?

Your fishes will be fine for this period of time. Just be sure to feed them well some days before leaving. A block food would be useful for the bala, though. My 0.02 ;)

Your fish will be fine. I am taking a two week spring break so I am making my friends feed my fish for the first week. They are not happy, but have no choice in the matter.
 
I don't think you'll have a problem. I have left fish for a week several time when I have gone on vacation. I'll probably do it again this year when I go to Panama City for SB this year.
 
I have also had bad experiences with both feeder blocks and autofeeders. I do not know what went wrong with the block but fish died, the feeder went nuts and dumped a weeks worth of food at once, luckily I was home so no fish died, as long as the bala is big enough not to be eaten you are fine if you feed them good quality foods before leaving feed a bit heavy. All three fish can easily go more than a week without food.
 
If your gonna be gone for only exactly 1 week, just feed more than usual on the last day that your there and your fish will be fine... don't worry.
 
Yea I had a feeling they would be alright. I was thinking about getting one of those automatic feeders but I know my O would attack the crap out of it and knock it off. Or he will eat my bala, cause he already tries to do that! Well thanks guys appreciate it!
 
Good thing they can last that long....I'm on spring break and the fish in my dorm won't be fed! I left a cube of worms in there....although I dont think it will last too long.
 
I agree, they should be fine for a week. I have two oscars and I am leaving for spring break also. My only concerns are about broken heaters etc. And I'm not sure, I might have a friend change my water while im gone.

Well... Maybe a week without food will make the O try harder. At least it will be well-fed. :naughty:
