how long can I keep thawed talapia

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I usually buy fresh tilapia, or it's been frozen and thawed. When I get home, I cut it into chunks and freeze. When I need it to feed, I just take out how many chunks I need for that feeding.

I thaw a fillet or 2 out. Cut them into bite size pieces. Feed some to fish. Put the rest back in a ziplock bag with all air & moisture squeezed out. Then I get another ziplock bag. Put about 10 ice cubes in this bag. I then put the bag of cut fish in a small plastic container and then rest the bag of ice on top of the fish. Then I put the plastic container in the fridge with the ice kissing it at all times. When I need some fish, I take some out and rest the bag of ice right back on the fish. I replace the ice cubes when needed, they last a long time in the fridge. As long as ice is kissing the fish, it will last for days and days! No foul odor for a looong time

Great advice all around. Thanks guys.

Many Tillapia fillets are individually pressure sealed in air tight packaging. I think is this is the case, you get at least twice the refrigerator time as fillets not individually wrapped.

As other have stated, place unwrapped frozen fish fillets inside of a zip-lock freezer bag and remove as much air as possible before sealing and thawing in the refrigerator.

IMO:
One day max for any fish fillet thawed at room temperature.
Two day max for unwrapped fish fillet thawed entirely in refrigerator.
Three - Four day max for air free sealed freezer bag fish fillet entirely thawed in refrigerator.
