How long can nitrifying bacteria live?

The story seems to have a missing piece. Perhaps you have anaerobic bacteria in the canister at this point, but I have no real idea on how they could survive. Lack of oxygen isn't a problem, but I'd think lack of food would be. Perhaps that type can go into hibernation.

Regardless, I don't think a canister full of anaerobic bacteria is a good plan.

Here's a study that did find anaerobic starvation led to a form of hibernation, versus aerobic starvation.

Another possibility is that the brown cruddy water in the canister had a ph below 6.0 all that time. In that case the BB would have entered dormancy.


So, I'm leaning towards a) those are anaerobic or b) the water was below a ph of 6.0 all these years. Just a couple thoughts.
