How long could and oscar stay in a 55?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I know a guy that had a mating pair in a 55 for several years. They were healthy and gorgeous.

The good thing is that you already realize that an Oscar shouldn't be housed for life in a 55. That topic gets argued and beat to death around here. If you have plans to have a 210 up and running in the near future, you can get an Oscar now at let it growout. Tank size, diet, regular water changes are all important with keeping cichlids. We may not be able to duplicate the humongous sizes of rivers and lakes but we still can supply the fish that we choose to keep with a healthy amount of space. I think your future 210 will be great for your mentioned stock.

Thanks for the response, yes I do realize that the oscar doesnt belong in the 55 and I really wanted to emphasize it to make sure no one came in here and called me stupid or arrogant for trying to keep one in a 55, the earlier I can get the oscar out the better, I think I may pick one up today because it will be about 3-4 months before I get my 210.

That should work out fine. What kind of Oscar are you getting? I really like the WC ones. I saw some for sale in the marketplace for $15.

I like the WC ones too, but I've never seen them for sell, so I think I'm gonna pick up a tiger oscar. Of all the big oscars that I see, the regular tiger oscars always look the best IMO. I'm not a big fan of the albino's (or any of the dyed albino's like blueberry oscars) and red oscars just arn't as appealing to me as tigers.

I'm have read the first page of this, and I'm sure I already know what the other 4 pages say. People love to overreact to this topic. Fact is, most ppl who don't know what these fish require and assume they can keep them in a 10 gal or something. You appear to be on the right thought path.

You'd be fine with an oscar in a 55 up to about 8" or so. Start pulling deco out of the tank as he grows (until you get the bigger tank for him as an adult) to make room... oscars are clods, they run into everything.

It took my oscar from 3 inches to 9 inches in 7 months the most,I had the oscar in a 55 gallon with other tank mates and upgraded to a 125 gallon.I must of gotten a pissed off unsatisfied oscar, because this one is always pissed about something or not satisfied even in a 125 gallon. Then again it depends on their personalities,so I am not going to say all oscars are like mine. This hobby is addicting and you be surprised on how much you would do for your fishes to stay happy,by getting them tank mates, larger tanks, ect. Most people i known who had oscars only put theirs in 10 to 30 gallons the most.So you are on the right track of doing something right. Also if you can go much bigger than a 210,cause you may not be satisfied with that tank later down the road possible. That is why I am debating and searching what type of stocking I want for a future upgrade tank.

actually the first couple pages were about every fish in general, not just oscars lol.

There really isn't much decoration in the tank because its basically just a growout for my fish until I get my bigger tank.
If he does stay in the 55 till he's about 7 or 8 inches, I will remove ALL decorations.

and thanks for the response :D

yeah oscars have alot of different personalities, I'm really hoping I get one that's very relaxed and chilled out most of the time

I can honestly dig a pond in the backyard, put the Oscar in there and it still wouldn't be satisfied,I am reaching the point of just giving the Oscar up.
