My LFS has a Tat they were originally selling for $80 but since they are about to go out of business he is on sale for $55 and I might have to take it, It's 12" and the only tank he could go in is my 30g until I get the time to buy a larger tank. So would he be able to survive in there for about another month or would he die from lack of space?

It will most likely die in the 55 due to lack of space. Hydrolycus sp. do not like small space and will start ramming into the walls of the aquarium and usually end up killing themselves. Better to leave him for someone who can actually keep the fish for life. These guys need 96"x36" foot print to be even slightly happy with there surroundings.

Hes in a 1.5 ft by 1 ft tank at my LFS right now and has been in there for over 2 months.

Ask them to put the tat on hold (pay up front)... then just go buy a 4x2x2 or a 5x2x2... that will last you a while... pick up some powerheads too they love the current

Understood most lfs fish are in small spaces but that is temporary in the fact that they are selling them and not planning of keeping them. When are you going to be setting up a 96"x36" tank in the next year to house this fish for life? It's better to start with the tank then find the fish. Hell if I bought all the fish I wanted I would have a 6' pima cramped in my 525. If I were you I would inform people in your area where this fish is so that it can have the proper housing. I too have been wanting H. tatauaia for a long time now that I have the proper housing for them I can't find any in my area.

That's why I need to jump on this sale, These fish are going *poof* from the market and we may not see any for another 5 years, And I'm pretty sure a fish that get's a max of 15" can live in an 18" wide tank.
