I was just wondering how long a fire eel can live in a 40 breeder. I'm ordering him as 4-5" and in the 40 is only a m dayyi eel, 2 Cory cats and 2 small plecs. I'm gonna be building a 350+ " as much footprint as my basement wall will give me" gallons. I'm doing a DIY plywood, with my dad and his friends help. But I am not getting that done until the summer. Do you think he will be fine for a little? thank you in advance :)

Yep, I would agree. He will be ok until summer.

I picked up two fire eels that size and am keeping them in my 29 gallon tank for a couple months while I get my 220 set up for them. They are the only fish in my 29 and will be the only fish in my 220 for a while.

Okay cool. I got him in my tank this morning he was alive and seemed healthy he dug into sand as soon as I put him in. I work 11-7 so I am hoping he is okay lol but the only open area of the tank is where the HOB filter is running into tank but my other eel hasn't jumped out of it from there so I'm hoping he's fine. I will update!

I would try to get the overflow protected as soon as you can. I found out when running a diy pvc overflow that the eel-like fish can get through them. I found one of my dragon gobies in my sump one day, but luckily it was an open sump so he was just swimming around. They will find any opening...eventually.

Well I got home and he was by the heater, so I moved all the decor around and added 2 pieces of pvc. He is bright color and he looks healthy, just his tail is a tad tore up. Im hoping he will be okay. I have a M dayyi with him i haven't seen him go after him but I'm worried he will

If you are really worried then I would grab a quick 10-20 gallon tank, maybe even another 40 and put the fire eel in there. You can get a cheap internal filter and use some of your existing cycled bio media in it to have any instant cycle on the new tank. Then, make sure you get a really good lid on the tank.

I might sound a little over protective but I just don't want to see you lose your fish.

I have my two by themselves right now and they come out to swim around all the time, especially when I am feeding them. I love watching them. Mine are so small that the coloration on their bodies is still a yellow-orange color. I can't wait until they mature more and their markings turn red.

I'm pretty sure it was. Just checked him quick put him in tank with bag got ready for work and met him out. I got some pics of him and moved tank around again
