How long do they live?Dat lifespan

I wondered about their longevity as well and posted this question in other threads. I even pm'd Lok tigerfish with this question (I didn't get a reply)

The real question is if I buy a 15 year old Dat, how long will I get to enjoy it. The one in my Avatar was nearly 13 years old 18 inches and 5.75 pounds when it met an accidental end. It showed no signs of age and I feel it could have lasted many more years. It would be nice to know the answer. There is a monster sized one at the lfs that is reported to be 15 years. It would take a considerable ammount of cash to get it, but for how long?

I read that a good way to estimate a datnoids age is a datnoid over 20" is about as old as he is in lenth. there are some pics of ones caught fishing that are huge (30" plus). not sure how much more they're growth rate is in the wild though.

all the large ST you see for sale 12 inch + must be around the 5-9 year old so lots of life left
This is good to know as I am looking to prchase an ST and dont expect to find anything smaller.

Yeah,I was wondering where that one came from.

I have been told dats can live 20+ years....I picked up 2 13-14inch ST's off someone and he bought them at 4inches 4years ago. Not sure if it helps.

Thanks i knew i had seen it but chouldnt find it

very nice and fat

its hard to say how long a ST will live for

no living thing has a clock that will run out after a set time

any fish kept in bad water may only last 3 weeks

its even hard to tell how old the little 3 inch IT we see for sale are as they grow so slow they may all ready be 1 or 2 years old at that size

as i have said i only know how old mine is as i have had it for 7 years it was 2 inch when i got it so you can add another year

i dont think its fair to say you can tell the age by its size as mine has grown 3 inch in the last year since he started eatting pellets

a fish in the wild would be a lot bigger than a fish the same age in a tank
