How long do y'all keep the tank lights on for?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Cool thanks everyone. I suppose the moral of the story is that it really doesnt matter, and as long as theyre not in complete darkness all the time theyll be fine...and that the bright tank lights are more for us than them...

yup, my non planted tank is on 8 hrs/day timer is set to on and off right around the time i'm home and off little after bed time. other than that, its on lights from room/natural.

Yeah I think I'll do that too. Keep it on when I get home until I go to bed.

Thanks!

I think it's always good to get other's perspective. But I find it really depends on your situation in terms of how much natural light one has, the size of you tank, the current wattage/gallon and how much light is penetrating, plant needs, etc. I think a lot of it is also trial and see what works best for your situation. As for me, after 1.5 years with my tank...I'm still trying to figure it out...LOL.

I have programmable lights in a lightly planted tank. There are six set points in the program. Here is my current schedule, subject to change:

Off (midnight - 7 AM)
5% (7 AM - 3 PM)
25% (3 PM - 4 PM)
100% (4 PM - 10 PM)
25% (10 PM - 11 PM)
5% (11 PM - midnight)

I try to keep the light bright at the time (4:00-10:00) when people are most likely to be home and looking at the aquarium. I'm usually in bed by midnight, which is when they go off completely. I also like to ramp up and down a bit so it's never 0 -> 100 or 100 -> 0. I may actually drop the 100% period to like 80% because it is quite bright.

From when i leave for school till i go to sleep so about 14 hours. my fish are fairly busy regardless
