How long do you keep wood in the tank for?

my cypress knees are only 6 years old and they're soft. I expected them to last for longer.
I have some more I plan on using for support structures in a multi-level tank. I'm going to coat them with silicone first.

A lot of plecos will also graze on the wood. That will casue it to breakdown. As long as it was cured properly it should last a long time.

yeah, forgot about tht, my plecos always chews on them, since then until now.
