I am new to the aquarium world, i have a 38 gallon tank, and my tank has started to cycle i believe, the water has started to go a yellowish color and smells like dog $#!7. it's started about 5 days ago, i did a 30% water change 3 days ago. i plan on doing a 50% water change tonight.and a 20% every three days till it clears up. but how long does it take for the bacteria to grow and balance out everything, i have the temperature set to 25C and i have a airater in the tank. any help would be great.

Posted via Mobile Deviceseems like your on a good track. But to make u feel better. I cycled jn 3 days and all my fish are perfectly fine. Just dont go crazy with the feedings our ur fish poop will like crazy and cause an ammonia spike.

Normally takes 4-6 wks.But there are alot of variables.Amount of fish, how you feed and such. Can can speed up the process if You have a filter on another tank that is established too put on it

i cycled my 90 in 10 days with the help of a bottle of cycle. but like said above don't stock it fast and limit the feeding. you will need a bit of time to build the good bacteria that u will need!!!

We'll on its own you'll need to cycle it for around 6-8 weeks but you can speed things up you can add a bacteria suppliment which will speed it up also you can take water and the crap in the substrate from a cycled tank and add it to a non cycled tank to do what people call a quick cycle which some times works and sometimes doesn't

What kind of filltration do you have ? do you have substrate in the tank ? do you have any fish, plants or invertibrates in the tank ?

For a fully Nitrogen cycle it takes 13 days I believe, you're on the right track though. More waterchanges never hurt anyone though!!

It took my tank almost 3 months to cycle doing 20% water changes every other day and not using any products to "help" it. I think 4-6 weeks is more typical, if you have some used media you could use it would be much quicker.

Reference please.

I have yet to see so much misinformation in one thread.
Look up how to fish less cycle its the fastest and best method besides using a seeded (beneficial Bacteria loaded filter)
Best of luck to you and in the end I think you will be happiest with a fish less cycle.
If you must do a fishy cycle it will take 4-6 weeks and be patient it may take longer depending on a few factors. two things that help speed up the cycling process are lots of aeration in the water (Air stones) And extra warm water (Don't go overboard with fish living in the tank) If your doing a fish less cycle fill your tank 3/4 of the way to increase aeration from your filter (from the waterfall of the filters exhaust) and crank the heat up to 90 where the beneficial bacteria is more likely to produce faster.

P.S The bacteria in a bottle products are very questionable for many reasons. One of which being shelf life. And temperature being random depending on where you get the product.
