how long does it take for a tank to cycle???

not all fish are strong. i had 3 small ebjds and i wanted them to grow very quickly and people advised me to do large water changes every other day. ebjd's are very sensitive and i lost 2 of them in a day. the third one didn't eat for a while but managed to survive. unfortunately it was the ugliest one of the batch. i had better experiece w/ weekly water changes.

You lost two of the three in the first day, sound more like a problem with acclimation. Sorry to hear of this.

I see ... I see.... People recommending more bacteria in a bottle products in the future .... And people declaring their tank is cycled after their first liquid test ... Oh boy

My fishy cycled 20H took exactly 50 days to cycle, just to add my 2 cents in. Definitely recommend fishless cycle though.

thank for the info guys. i'll take everything in consideration and try and do some more research myself. im pissed i did a 50% water change yesterday and i put my jd's in seperate cups and i forgot to put something over the cups and i brought my daughter upstairs and when i came back down the smalles JD was on the table. i put him back in the cup seemed to be ok , but after putting the fish back in the tank i haven't seen the little guy.

yeah, when you cycle a tank youre waiting for the beneficial bacteria to be established in the filters so they can consume ammonia and nitrites

Grab a sponge filter and a HOB from an existing cycled tank. Do a water change from your existing tank into your new one. So yes the person at the lfs was right in a way you are jsut speeding up the colonization of bacteria with existing bacteria. With water chages you can stock your tank after a week easily.
