I want to add white sand to my 75g as the bare bottom look is getting old. If I add 50lb of used white sand how long will it take to settle on bottom? I need to know because I don't have anywhere to put my fish if it's going to take a long period of time. Thanks.

Just rinse the sand real well in a 5 gallon bucket, and then pour it in the tank. The fish will move out of the way. No need to take the fish out of the tank. You DO need to take a little bit of water out of the tank, though.

Alright that's good to here. It Will save a lot of time now that I don't have to take the fish out.

It depends on how fine that sand is. As was said I would rinse it well to take out and extras which should help it settle faster. Also what you could do is add a bit at a time. Add enough that the water becomes slightly cloudy, which should take about a day to settle, then do so again and again over the course of a few days until it's all added.

So I can just leave the fish in the tank while the sand settles?

Yea once it's rinsed well you can put the whole container in the tank and submerge the sand or cup by cup which ever is best for you and it just falls to the bottom no mess no cloudyness if it was rinsed well

Yeah, just whatever you do avoid dumping it in; that can create a cloud of sand which is annoying as hell, and probably not good for the fish

"no mess, no cloudyness"...I've never rinsed sand well enough to have NO cloudiness. But, close enough. Know what I mean? If it's a little cloudy for a few days, fish won't care.

Hello; Here is a way I have treated sand. I sift the sand while it is dry. I use a colander or make a box with window screen. The hole size in the screen will determine the size of the very fine particles sifted out.
Doing this while dry allows the fine powder stuff to be removed. After that a rinse in a bucket helps as well.

I have not used sand in a long time. I find bb sized gravel to be better. If cheap construction sand is used, I have found it contain a good range of particle sizes. With the suitable screen opening size a particular size of particles can be had.

Good luck

Get you an Aquaclear "quickfilter" and connect it to a strong (300gph+) powerhead, OR a magnum canister with micron cartridge. Either will help clear that sandstorm up relatively quickly (usually within 24 hours depending on tank size. I do that when i set up my salt FOWLR or Reef tanks using oolitic sand which is even finer than normal sand. Works every time, but sometimes take a few swap-outs of the quick filter or at least rinsings...
