How long does it take your bichirs to find their food?

Takes a matter of seconds for my palmas and sen, but it seems abit longer for my dels and ornate

I've noticed the same thing with mine. Usually, my sens and lower jaws notice the food right away and go after it right when the food hits the ground, but my lap will take a minute to go look for the food. Sometimes she'll wait for a piece of tilapia to roll a few times before she makes a move to get it.

My sen is usually pretty quick, about 30 seconds, but she is slow compared to my young del, he/she is amazingly quick at sniffing out food.

I think it really depends on the species and individual personalities.

My senegal hits the pellet even before it sinks to the bottom. My ornate on the other hand, waits patiently for everyone to have their fill before tucking in like a gentleman.

I noticed with my polys that they find tilapia much faster than they look for and find pellets. Maybe tilapia smells stronger to them and makes it easier to find.

So you switched to tilapia after all :naughty:

I switched back to tilapia recently too. They still like their hikari cichlid gold sinking pellets, but I had to chop up some tilapia for some blue dempseys I recently got so I figured I would let the bichirs benefit too.

Even my KKP's are eating it.

Have you guys tried anything to make your bichirs go after the food quicker? I tried letting it marinate in Garlic Guard but it didn't seem to make a difference.

Are you trying to get them to eat pellets more? Maybe try letting them soak in a cup with defrosted blood worms?

Ditto. Same with market shrimp.

I have to use a feeding rod, the geos/sevs and catfish go crazy for the talapia and if i dont hand feed the poly's, they wont get any...

Yep, I switched to tilapia. They seem to like tilapia much more than pellets for some reason. I noticed some of my polys will chew on the pellets, but they'll make a big mess and little pieces of pellets will be left over. Then none of them want to eat the small leftover pieces. Plus, some of them have a much harder time chewing and swallowing the pellets. But they can swallow the tilapia whole without any problems. I'm just going to feed tilapia and shrimp for now because I'm too lazy to clean up the mess after they eat pellets.

How's your lap and ropefish doing by the way Serg? Let me know if you ever want to do a SoCal group buy with Toyin one day.
