How long does it take

Well fish dont really stop growing I dont think. They just slow down. A red should be 7" the first year. Some dont get much bigger then that depending on diet, tank size, and water conditions. With perfect conditions 10" is possible in 3 years. Anything over 10" is HUGE and of course takes some time.

7"s in a yr.. i dont think that is possible sorry

no he is correct... baby reds.. .5 in size.. being well fed .. say in a 77-100 gallon aquarium WILL grow to be about 5.5 - 7.5 in a year...

**** my red went from nickle sized when I got him Febuary of last year and is now very close to 8". My piraya that I received from Pedro over at Aquascape this time last year at 3" are also close to eight inches. They all grew quickly to 7", but the distance from 7-8" has taken about four months. I grew them out in a 55 gallon to 7". I had two Emp 330s for filtration and a marineland 1140 (i think thats the model) as my very powerful powerhead. I believe the powerhead is crucial to good growth because it forces the fish to swim more and burn more calories so it eats more. My quality diet of mostly fresh shell on shrimp, nightcrawlers and whole fish also was important. My fish once in my posession are nevery fed feeders.

Here is an example of how fast they grow in just two months and I dont jsut feed them perfectly like some people do. You can image how big they can get in a year. I included rough estimations on the size. I measured them around these times and the largest was normally alittle bigger, and the other two were closer to this size.

Day 1 - .5"

Cool Pictures, I hope they do well. They sure look happy. Best of Luck!:headbang2

Wow yours grew fast.

The first year they grow fast, I had some go from a body the size of a nickle to over six inches in about 9-10 months, but then form 6"-around 9" took about the same time, they only got about an inch bigger in the following year. The largest I ever had I got at 12" and it took just over 4 years to hit the 14" mark when it died during a power outage. Outside of Steinhardt Public Aquarium it was the largest natterreri I have ever seen.
