How long does prime stay "active" in dechlorinated water?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
wow , well the lady first said " It gets filtered out" Then when I proceeded with questions as to how. She said there should not be any left over sulfur. I am gonna try tomorrow and see if I can find someone with half a brain. Disappointing.... That amquel number you gave me a while back with that scientists name he was really helpful. This is my first seachem disappointment.

Great read! I missed that one I read their other filtration spreadsheet. I hate how their symbol blocks some of the reading however.

Chloramine is chlorine and ammonia I thought...

You are correct.
Yes that is correct, but what does your biofilter turn it into? (you guys caught me, Can't believe I muffed that one.)

As for "it get's filtered out" It outgasses. Hydrosulferous acids are very very weak acids and as such are typically outgassed during aeration.

I was thinking it must be gassed off. I run a lot of air and filtration on my setups. That seems to be the only logical explanation otherwise our fish tanks would smell like egg farms. BrianP is looking in to it a little further so we will undoubtedly get a firm grasp on this.

I've never used Prime, but am thinking about picking up a bottle of it instead of another NovAqua Plus bottle (which I've been using for years).

I saw someone saw a cap-full of prime treats 50 gallons. Is there any ill-effect of over-dosing? Also saw in another thread previously that someone said prime made their house wreak for days after a big water change. Is this common? I don't mind paying a little extra for NovAqua Plus if it means no odor...

Novaqua doesn't have any sulfurous compounds in it to my knowledge.

if you overdose you will notice quite a smell, I use NLS thera A with garlic and the combo really stinks. If you cut back on the amount of Prime you add, the smell isnt all that bad,,, slight sulfur smell if you open your hood and take a whiff, but that goes away in a day or so. I tend to smell my water a lot,I know im nuts but I can tell the health of my tank by how it smells.I like a sweet peaty smell. I would only overdose unless I was having serious water problems

I feed NLS as well and the combo kinda smells initially. I got over it havent noticed the smell in months and noone has said anything. I smell my tank as well. I like the nice clean earthy smell :)

As far as over dosing of course it is possible. However on the bottle it says it can be used up to 5 times the recommended dose in an emergency to reduce Nitrites. I highly recommend the stuff myself. I was an amquel guy for a while but I am back on the prime bandwagon since I bought 4 liters and realized how much cheaper it was :)
