Dude, as much as it sucks just let it happen. Get him to clean the tank and show him the ropes. I have bought my bro so many things for fish to try to get him into the hobby its not even funny. Try to embrace it, and really teach a younger one the proper way of keeping. I bought my brother a 90 gallon sw tank with filtration skimmer stand etc, and even a 14 inch bamboo shark and a 6 inch bamboo shark and a purple tang. He still doesn't clean tank, or feed them for that matter. I wish my bro would take an interest like yours

thats not including the 3g, or the 55g. This is what he ultimately wanted.....
this is what i've been trying to do. he's had it for a little over a week, and it looks perfectly healthy for now. i thought of a home for it, my dentist's office has a giant tank, somewhere around 200 gals, so i think that will be it's future home...

Eeek...how old is your brother? Does he have some money where maybe he could pick up a 55 or something off craigslist? Make him financially responsible for the fish and he will learn quick.

if hes not going to listen to you then you should take the fish out when hes not there and take it back to the lfs and replace it with a few neon tetras or beta or something of that size.

It will die soon. Show your mom pics of full grown oscars and maybe she'll make him take it back.

wow a THREE gallon come on!.. even all my lfs know a 3 gallon is to small ( even tho some will sell an oscar to a kid with a 10 gallon ) but ya wow. i have one in a 20 long ( yes i know again to small ) but hes 1 inch maybe 1.5 and already terririzing the platys ( lmao ) but once he reaches 3 inches hes going in the 125 i have in the basement.. unlike your brother i actally DO have the right setup when my oscar grows out of hte 20 long...

yup just give back the Oscar AND the Pleco back
and then teach him the ropes and let him help you clean your tank so he knows the responsibility that comes with fishkeeping and if he's still interested get him some ghost shrimp or a betta

I KNOW...

the tank is actually quite clean, the gravel is white, and there is virtually no crap on it. the filter is actually quite powerful...

It may look clean, but the ammonia may be WAY off the chart......I would not even use a 3gl to growout Oscar fry.....If money is an issue, go to craigslist and purchase a used 55g-75g tank.......Normally the tanks will be way under the usual price.....MAn, do not keep that oscar tied up in there....The lack of space and the ammonia levels will definately prevent proper growth at this age/size and the fish will turn out with a crooked spine and scruntch up body...........
