Oops, voted before I read. It's been about 25 years, but not continuous (I was out of fishkeeping for most of the 90s). When I've had tanks, I've had bichirs though since '84-ish. My first was a big WC P. senegalus, and then I had a P. palmas. I remember seeing one in one of the old fish books (Innes? Axelrod? It's been a long time) and hoping to someday find one in a shop. Ropefish were pretty common, but my old senegalus was the first live bichir I ever saw. A few years later P. palmas started showing up on the list (I was working at my LFS) and I ordered myself one.
Based on the poll, the majority owners have kept 3 years or less. This either mean bichir is still fairly new to fish keeping or most are just following a "fad" or "trend". For those you that kept bichirs for over 5 years ore more, I'm looking up to you guys to keep this bichir interesting.
Lol! I'm the only one in the 6 years category. But is that mean that I was alone on that month, day, hour, minutes and seconds when I first bought my very first bichir?
