I always rinse my new Charcoal out alot under cold running water but it seems like no matter how much I rinse it out it still always has some black dust that I can't get rid of, I mean I rinse it out for sometimes 15 minutes and there is always more black dust that I could rinse out if I wanted too. I don't think I can get it any cleaner unless I wanted to stand there and do it for an hour or two. Is it clean enough and activated enough after 10 or 15 minutes or so.

Until you don't see black dust coming off of it.

wow, captain sarcasm has returned... just wash the best you can... and then you will be fine... it will work itself out in the tank...but just don't dump it in...

I was being serious, Lieutenant Buzzkill :D

Are these pre-made filters or bulk charcoal?

Remember while your rinsing it, it's working at removing the chemicals in your rinse water :D.

Rinse to remove the major part of the dust..5-10 seconds. Dust won't hurt the tank or fish.

If it's bulk, put it in a filter sock.

If it's bulk then the black dust will start to disappear after 5mins of rinsing. I remembered when I had my Rena carbon bag and the black dust never went away. I ended up throwing it away and used my own bucket of carbon I bought. Carbon usually last 2-3 weeks so I wouldn't worry too much about it. Not all fish keepers use carbon.

It's bulk Dr. Joe, out of a big plastic gallon jar.

Ok, if the dust is bothering you, is it possible to use a filter sock (or even a knee high nylon would work)?

Do you have a special problem that you're using carbon for?

Curious, what part of MIchigan? I'm from Mt. Clemens.

I just wet it in a bucket of tank water and throw it in... if I see the dust in my tank it lasts for 30 seconds...
