How long can you siphon with your mouth. I was thinking of buying 25ft or 50ft of 1/2" tubing that I would run into my yard to siphon water out, would I still be ok using my mouth to start it or would it be too much air, or once you simply pull water over the edge of the tank it doesnt matter how long the hose is?

You got it. Once the water is over the edge of the tank, you have your siphon started. From there gravity will finish the job. My hose is about 50'.

When I was using a hose I always cheated. I would hook it to the outlet outside turn it on just long enough for water to start pumping into the tank and then turn it off and unhook the hose instant siphon.

A 1/2 hose should fit nice enough upto the garden hose spout that you can get water flowing into the tank by just holding it up to the spout. Then when you got water to the tank just let go and the water will start to siphon back out. the few 10ths of a gallon of untreated water that goes into the tank wont hurt anything.

Use what you like, just think for less money you could get that length, 5/8 garden hose for draining.

I did the same... I thought I was so clever! lol

i prefer to just connect a hose to a submersible pump, drop the pump in the tank and plug it in.
who needs gravity when you have power

Now thats really cheating lol.

when you have to do hundreds of gallons worth of WC, "cheating" is the best way.
not to mention, i used to keep large barrels and containers of aged/treated water, so once the tanks are drained, i just take the pump out of the tank, put it in the barrel, run the hose to the display, and plug her back in.
i can change a 180g with gravel vac, glass cleaning, and filter cleaning, in just a matter of minutes.
maximum efficiency... minimum effort.
