How long should I cycle my tank before I add my fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'll just infest my tank with guppies and wait it out.

A cycle will not even start without the ammonia source, While a lot of people use fishless processeI am a fan of the old fashioned way, adding just a small load of fish and waiting a few days before adding a couple more, this allows the BB to catch up between additions without causing a dangerous ammonia spike. This allows me to start stocking the tank on the second or third day after filling.

I swapped about 10gallons of the water with the water out of my 30g tank. Then I put the rest of my guppies and my cory cat in there. Theres about ten of them I think. Then I went to petsmart to pick out a Trimac or "low grade FH" while they still had them. I got him home, floated him for a little bit and then I put him in the tank. He loves the tank and seems to be doing fine. I had to take out the cory cat because he was acting like a idiot. He kept getting in the trimacs way so the trimac kept striking him but he was to stupid to leave him alone. He kept going back to the side of the tank the trimac was on to look at his own reflection. So I took out the cory cat and 2 guppies.

I will probably swap another 10g of water tomorrow and wait another day then throw in my midas.

As a kick start for your filter try adding a bit of sludge from the filter of the other tank, it sounds weird but the sludge is full of benificial bacteria. It is a much richer source of BB than the tank water.

the Trimac is the hardest fish to find in the tank full of guppies.. He keeps digging under my sponge filter and hiding under it. I just looked in the tank for him for about 5 minutes and he wedged himself up under the backside of rocks I put in there. I wonder how long it will take him to get comfortable with the tank..

here are some bad pictures of him and my tank, let me know what you think.

What type filters are you running on the other two tanks you have?

whisper 30's

Take one of cartiges out of the Whisper and add it to the new tank. It has good bb and will help your tank along.

I had to put in my 11" midas in way to early. I had to get him out of his tank so I could put other fish in the tank I had him in. I had a bunch of fish mixed in with a breeding pair of convicts. When I discovered the babies I had to take everything else out of the tank. Hes been in there for abougt 18 hours and he is perfectly fine.
