How long should i wait before i hold my snake?

Ewww... No wonder hes stressed. They like to dig. Repti-carpet doesnt allow that. Not to mention its abrasive and a breeding ground for bacteria. And it looks plain UGLY. Ditch it. Ditch the 'rock cave' as well. Those marketed 'hide spots' are just to look pretty. You'll realize the whole pet store ideal eventually. Just know they DON'T want you to be successful, know that much.

Get yourself a flat peice or cork bark and a bag of aspen (not cedar or pine! ASPEN).

How big is the tank, and what does he have for heating? What have you been feeding and how often? How big is he?

The tank is a 10 gallon fiish tank. Hes got a half of the bottom of the tank heating pad. I haven't fed him yet as he got here on wednesday. Hes a hatchling whom i'd assume is a month or two old. Just found a site for cork bark. Is cork bark the one that looks like a tree peice and the flat is just a flat peice of it?
http://www.blackjungle.com/Merchant..._Code=PT-2851&Category_Code=C&Store_Code=BJTS is the rock cave i have and the other formation of rocks is one i used to use in my fish tank that assembles into a rock formation. The substrate is called Terrarium liner by Zilla.

Yeah, those caves are crap. Hides are TO HIDE. You cant hide in those, you cant expect them to feel safe inside. 99% of marketed hides dont accomplish the basic task of safety.

Cork flats are slightly curved, and you can buy tubes as well. Get a flat though, the tubes work better for fat snakes and some lizards. I baught mine from that website at an expo.

Ditch the liner, get aspen. :) Good luck!

Yeah, those cave things are made to look pretty, because pretty makes more money than unpretty. But they're not completely useless. A young corn snake can hide in one though, at least for several months.

They are useless as hides. But not totally useless! They make great models for dinosaur dioramas for kids ;)

I agree GET ASPEN shavings and a heat pad that is all you need unless your house gets really cold. The aspen is enough to hide in at about 2" deep. Also, I would not worry too much about handling him Kingsnakes and Corn snakes are very easy to keep and tolerate a lot of stress. Give him the night to rest and check him the next day, if he seems calm, some light handling will not hurt him a bit. Good luck with your new snake.
