I was actually thinking along the same lines. grab some shrimp put them in a stocking and sink it in the tank. Figure it should keep it cycled as it breaks down and converts to ammonia.
You have a really warped idea of what's in "off the counter ammonia." Your urine has...God knows what, with the horrible diets people have these days.
If the ammonia has any sort of detergent in it, that's not the stuff you wanna use anyway. Just plain ammonia, not the unnecessary toxins from your urine...Gross.
Even if there's no fish, there should be enough fish dung left in your filters to keep the bacteria alive for quite some time. I'd say months. Also you could use some baby fish food to feed your bacteria. That's what I do when I start cycling a tank.
Really? So you think the tank would be fine for 7 or 8 days if I just left it alone? God knows that would be easiest. I tried a fishless cycle once and totally screwed it up (put too much ammonia I think) so I admit I'm a little nervous about trying the ammonia thing again. A 1/2 tsp is much less than I used in that botched experiment though, so maybe it would be fine...

This is what I was thinking. No need to waste $$ on that bottled ammonia. Nobody should ever need that stuff. Test everyday, note the nitrates, and as soon as they start stabilizing (no longer going up), add a bit of fish food and keep testing...
