I plan on setting up a 180 gallon aquarium and would like to know how long this stock will last before I need to upgrade. And also, what size tank do you recommend for the future when they're all fully grown. Im thinking a 300 gallon should house them all nicely but would like to hear from some experienced hobbyist.

I would like to have a:

Red Devil
Festae
Jaguar
Grammodes
Convict pair
Jack Dempsey

What do you guys think? Any and all suggestions are much appreciated.

Well in theory... You could house that group for a pretty good length of time. Those aren't "massive" fish, though they are large. I think you would find that a lot of people would try and keep that group in a 180 for life (that would be the "overstock to spread out aggression" approach). It would all depend on the temperament of the individuals, and you have a lot of highly aggressive fish on that list. Chances are good that one or more if them will flip out once they approach maturity. Some people have been lucky with combos like that, but many more have ended up coming home one day to a surprise slaughter.

And for the record, I wouldn't try it in my 180, though it would be a sweet tank if it worked.

Totally hit or miss and things like size and gender fit into the equation as well.

I have similar stock in a 300 and it works but it hasn't been without some drama along the way. I've had to reintroduce both my jag and Jd more than once.

Well they would all start off at a few inches. Im not very fond of overstocked tanks. I like my fish to have plenty of territory to claim so they're not all over each other all of the time.

VERY NICE TANK YOU HAVE! Beautiful fish. I'd like to do something similar in the future.

Yea I agree it is a hit or miss. But I think that by raising them together from a very young age and paying close attention to their personalities it could work.

Growing them out together seemed to help quite a bit but they still had a few issues along the way. Now that the Jd is outsized by a few, he gets himself into trouble with the bigger fish ....

With large cichlids its always a bit of a gamble.

Thanks for the kind words! It's been a very cool tank to live with.

Your Festae is really nice. My female is about 5-6 inches and she has gorgeous coloring. She looks even better now that i've put her in with my 9 inch Red Devil. She kind of has a thing for him but he doesn't seem to be interested in mating with her. I would like to see what the offspring would look like though.

sounds cool ive kept lots of aggressivr fish together and in my experience the red devil may be the biggest problem, i'd suggest getting a midas instead as they're a bit more chilled... the 180 will do for a year i would think. good luck.

Yea I know. I have a 9 inch Male RD now in a 100 gallon and he's been a problem since he was just 3 inches a little over a year ago. He runs the 100 gallon he's in no problem and doesn't seem to cause much trouble anymore.

barred midas would be a better choice rather than a RD
