hey guys how long will it take my tank to settle and get clear? its been a day and a half since i filled it like a week? or more?

o yea i got 7 pounds of live rock in there will the water affect it? being full of sand and all

Do you have any filtration on there?

Your liverock won't be live for long or become live if there's no water circulation.

I dunno how long it will take to clear up if there's no water polishing media on there, probably awhile. If you have a filter on there sucking stuff out then keep cleaning the polishing pads or cartridges off and it will clear up faster.

i have a power head circulating water and i am ordering a filter tonight with next day shipping since its free to me.

k.
With just a powerhead circulating it will take a LONG time to clear up.
The dust won't effect the liverock, if any sand or anything gets on it you can blow it off with the powerhead. This will happen periodically anyway when you have fish in there.
Wait until you put the filter on then it will clear off pretty quick, within a day probably.

okay i should be getting a filter soon and then a portien skimmer but i really need a refractometer or a hydrometer i used a friends to get it started.

Was it one of the plastic hydrometers? If so, did your friend show you how to use it?

They're kind of tricky to get a semi-accurate reading because you'll get bubbles and it will be way off.
I always gently smack mine back and forth on the tank while it's still submerged until there's no visible bubbles (on the front or back of the pointer). Check the water several times to make sure your reading coincides with all the other readings. Sometimes the arrow will stick also.

If possible buy a couple of them. Make sure the readings coincide with each other really close. If one is just WAY off, or reads a different number every time that one is probably bad, so use the other one.
I bought one the other day where the arrow kept sticking and when I tried to measure my salinity it would stick at like 1.006. I even tried banging it really hard on stuff and it wouldn't unstick, so you can get some bad ones sometimes. If there's extremely innaccurate or sticky the store should take them back.

yea we tested it 10 hours after filling we tested like 4 or 5 times then made sure it was right. when i get the money i will get a refractometor.

Yeah plastics hydros are annoying. We use them at work and I've never cared for them. I use a floating glass hydro at home. I've always been told they were more accurate than the plastic ones. . .although I've never compared a sample with a refractometer. . .any known issues accuracy in floating hydros?

Obviously I know you can't read it while you have equipment on and I've always found that to be a drawback. . .but are there any other than that?

I always heard the glass ones were supposedly more accurate too but I haven't seen any comparisons between the 2 and I don't know how true it is which is why I just bought the plastic one.
It has worked just fine for me as long as I get the bubbles off (I have the method down now lol). Most of the people I know that have nice SW tanks just use the plastic ones so I didn't worry about it.

I might try out a refractometer eventually, I just don't see a great need really. It would be better, but as long as I'm matching the water for my water changes to the water in the tank I don't see there being huge problems, and I can do that with the plastic one.

i still have not ordered a filter but i did set up a temporary sump with mechanical filtration
