How Many African Cichlids can 125 gallon tank hold.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
>.<;; I keep around 45 mixed lake malawi + few frontosas in 100 G tank and they seem to be fine. They are all adult size ranging 5-9 inches. If you keep up w/ your frequent water changes and good filterations, 50 is more than possible but w/ JD and Oscar.. that's not a good idea. Again, I run 3 canisters w/ 100 G capacity on each w/ Aquaclear power head and 80 G HOB filter that's about 380 G worth of filteration.

As far as Africans go, petco almost solely holds mbuna anyway, so I'm sure the petco worker just didn't feel the need to elaborate. I know it sounds like I'm supporting petco and blindly following them, but I'm not. I'm also not supporting blindly opposing everything they say. I normally test any workers no matter the store before I ask my real questions. I know the petco by me in Poughkeepsie actually has very knowledgable workers there and they aren't afraid to say I don't know and point you to someone who would, even if that's another store. That's why I trust them so much when I go in. But no matter who tells me anything I always try to research the subject to make sure they're correct

Yeah I'm still not sure what I want to with my 125 gallon tank. To keep the Oscar and JD or to get rid of them, and get African cichlids.

How long are you planning to keep this tank running? I ask this because most people don't take longevity into consideration when mixing cichlids. For many of the experienced hobbyists, success of a mixture is based on co-inhabitating for AT LEAST 2 years. A lot of the 'my mix worked' on online forums is based upon several months together - but not over 2 years.

In 2 years time, basically all cichlids have time to reach sexual maturity - which is when their true temperaments and behaviors come out. A Jack Dempsey and Oscar can survive with rift lake cichlids - it does happen. However, the success rate is far outweighed by the failures. The big American cichlids are called tankbusters for a reason - they NEED space. A 125g is good for the two, but not much more.

Besides space, you need to take into consideration the dietary needs of your fish - your fish have a much different diet than many of the rift lake cichlids.
