How many african's can be put in a standard 125G tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wow... am not going to read all the hissy fits, but as said it all depends on the fish. Not to mention how much filtration and water changes you are going to do. (IE you can go for the Jap sardine can type tank if you really like that look. Just means a ton of work to keep your fish happy.)

I tend to have ~25 haps/peacocks in my 125. But well it changes day to day... And well it is impossible for me to stop buying new fish so I end up getting more tanks and moving fish around. (Mbuna well they just keep breeding so I can't tell you how many are in those tanks... say the equivalent of about 50 adults).

So in other words there is never any magic number... For tanks that size I would suggest you pick what fish you really want, get them keep them for a month or so, see how easily water parameters stay good and if you feel you want more and things are all looking good go ahead and add some more. Just remember that these fish grow too.

I haven't been keeping cichlids that long, a little over a year but here is my opinion. I love yellow labs and I also love German Red peacocks too. If I had an opportunity start fresh with a large tank like that I'd go with an 15 Red German Peacocks (all male) and 4 labs (1 male and 3 female), then I'd throw in (2) Electric Blues males, the most beautiful ones you can find.

So, all together that is 21 fish total I believe. I know you said Mbunas but those Red Peacocks look really cool and they seem to get along with everyone too. The labs will turn into "too many" in no time and you'll have a full tank with the electric blues really standing out due to their unique color. You'll have reds, yellows, blues and of course you'll see something else when you buying those.

Just my opinions, take them for what they are worth...also i recently changed my 75 gallon to a sandy bottom and I couldn't be happier with the outcome.

I have (4) yellow labs - (1) is holding, (3) electric blues, (1) compressiceps, (3) clown loaches, (1) common placo, (1) red zebra, and together my setup looks great with the color.

Just going slightly off topic Jonp recall that only the dom. male will really show color if they are all german reds, hence you need to get males that are different types for peacocks if you want them all to show there color.

Thanks for that, again something I didn't know but do now. I had (2) peacocks and they both looked great but I suppose that's because they didn't have a woman peacock to chase after...

Ikevi thanks for that information...

the larger the better of course in terms of mbuna, do you know what kind the africans are?

I a lab may work for a possible addition

Some, maybe you could help me ID the other ones:
1 Yellow Lab
1 Cobalt Blue
2 jewel
1 red zebra
1 albino red zebra
1 acei
Need some help with id'ing these 3, 1st one is blue, usually with dark stripes, the 2nd one I have no idea, the 3d is yellow with darker yellow stripes, I couldnt get him to come out of hiding just now but I can tell you he is not a yellow lab.
