How many africans can I keep in my 55??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
you can;t just stock your tank with africans that you think are pretty. when i started into africans, i did that. i went throught 30+ malawis and ended up with 9 that got along. if you like peacocks, yellow labs are good with them, if you ike zzebras, get more zebras. you need to make a list of everything you can find at your LFS that you like. use the like to cichlid-forum. looks each fish up my its profile and the profile has a 1-5 agression scale and get fish what fall under the same level, also ground fish be habitat. some require larger tanks, rocks or sand.

Well, unfortunately, there are a couple things wrong with your stocking already. One, mbuna and peacocks are not pairing fish, so buying just 2 red zebras is a bad idea. One will likely kill the other off, as they're quite aggressive. Which brings me to problem number two - mixing mbuna with peacocks. Not really a good idea. Mbuna are very fast and aggressive, which doesn't work well with the slower moving, more peaceful haps and peacocks. Plus, mbuna require a very rocky habitat, while peacocks need more in the way of open swimming space. I'd recommend figuring out if you want a hap/peacock tank, or a mbuna tank, and trade in whichever fish don't mix for more that do.

Also, buying unidentified africans from a store is never really a good idea. Especially with mbuna tanks (which is what most mixed, un-id'd africans are), you REALLY should research fish first, come up with a compatable stock list, and then look for your fish.

:iagree: This is the main problem with your stock. sinister has it right on.
Letsgomets why are you taking it personal you can put almost any fish together when they are small without any problems. The fact is you are going to have major fighting and it is going to be too late to take the fish back.

ok i got a better and easier question to answer. i decided that no matter what that i want demasoni's. You guys say that red zebra can co-exist with them. every single lfs i know that ive gone to has employees that cant sex them so deciding to get 1 male and 3 females of 1 species is almost impossible for me to do. Im want to get at least 3-4 demasoni's. SO, What other malawi's can co-exist and "Thrive" together with them and how many of each should I get?? Thanx again for the responses and advice, I too care for my fish and dont want to own a death tank!!

made a mistake those are electric blue's not blue peacocks:hitting:

Well, sorry, but if you don't want a 'death tank', then you'll have to get AT LEAST 12 demasoni. You can't keep just a few, one will become dominant and kill the rest off.

can anyone id the fish in the pics?? also which ones should i take back cuse im gona go to the lfs tomorrow. there in there with 2 red zebras

Letsgometsreyes: From the looks of the posting, it seems as if you overreacted to some of the replies that were given to you. Also, note that name calling and personal attacks will not be tolerated here on MFK. Please don't let it happen again.

Others involved: Please do not come down on someone for not taking advice that you deem applicable. In the end, it's up to the person asking for the advice that chooses the path he/she wants to follow. I understand that you are trying to help and antagonistic remarks were made, however, prolonging this back and forth nonsense and borderline threats will not get us anywhere. I have deleted the posts that have crossed the line. Let's keep this civil from this point on.
