if you wanna set up a nice mbuna tank, go with the smaller, dwarf species. Yellow labs are cool, zebras, socolofi, etc, would all get along great in a 55

:iagree: I'd say around 15 to 20 of the dwarf mbunas would be good.

Get 15-20 peacocks/haps

I had a peacock that was 7-8 inches himself. I have less than that in a 120. I would not recommend that many haps/peacocks in a 55 unless they are all just past fry stage...

i would NOT recommend any haps in a 55 gallon tank. if you are meaning you want mbuna, i like yellow labs, demasonis, johannis, rusties, most of the labidochromis species would work ( i love the color of the perlmutts).

or you could put shellies from lake tanganyika in there (mike would be the guy to ask about those).

i would put about 10 yellow labs and 10 rusties.. just because they are my preferred favorites. and lots of rockwork and hiding spots.

if you want west african/SA fish apistogrammas are quite beautiful and i love rams.

if i were you, id stay clear of kenyis (too aggressive!) and some of the larger mbuna like bumblebees (crabros) empresses and venustus. i had a venustus (a hap) that outgrew a 90 gallon tank by himself.

a group of peacocks would also work (no haps though!)..
best of luck and maybe try narrowing down your list and come back and ask us what would work-there are alot of mbuna to choose from!

rams, dwarfs, zebras or labs [if you're going with slightly more agressive ones, drop the rams they're not too aggressive and will be bullied]

sorry! i dont mean keeping rams WITH the mbuna lol.. sorry for the confusion. i was just pulling off the top of my head what smaller ones would work-not necessarily together lol..

dont put rams with mbuna--bad juju.

sorry for the confusion!

i probly should of mentioned this before. but im getting a new 150g soon so i have room for growth. i would of mention that earlier but i havnt been on in a couple days
