My first afro tank was a 55 with 2 hob filters at a total of 750 gallons per hour. Heavily stocked with malawi cichlids and lace rock I put 9 semi adults in. You don't need to start off with this much if you put in a ratio of at least 3 females to 1 male per species. They breed like flies on trash. The only reason to go all male is because females are generally dull in color so everyone likes males. Just make sure to do major H20 changes if you underfilter and overstock. I did 50% twice a week. Hope it helps.

Thanks, I would just prefer to stay away from any breeding, as I have found with my sa/ca it just causes to much turmoil. As for dealing with overstock, that is nothing new to me(see my sa/ca link in my sig). Though my tank will definetly not be underfiltered.

Use the guidelines on chiclidforum... Adding all the fish at once may cause some of the parms. to spike. Haps/Peacocks seem to be a little more forgiving to new tankmates as opposd to Mbunas.

oops. here it is. she had 11 ACs, a pleco, a madtom catfih and a few loaches. Depending on your filtration 10-20

really like the rock setup...

Thanks, only took about an hour and 4 or 5 atempts to get a stable setup. As you can see I used some eggcrate behind the rock to keep it off the glass.
