How many american cichlids can go into a 125g?

What about true red terrors? I keep hearing completely different things about them. I have heard they grow to 14" and I have heard 8" max. Aggression wise, I have also heard a vary wide array of opinions. Some that they are true bruisers, similar to Midas, red devil, jaguar, etc... Others have said they aren't much more aggressive than the GT and much less aggressive than salvini's, who is right and who is wrong? Hoping to hear from someone with experience with them.

I think I have made up my mind for the most part. Gonna go with a chocolate and a threadfin, they are big and peaceful and should get along fine with my current stock. I am just having a hard time picking out this very last cichlid. If anyone has any suggestions I am all ears and would love to hear them. Otherwise have been considering, true red terror, rainbow cichlid (people on here have said they are really peaceful and can be very timid, but my guy at my LFS who has been giving me great info said they compare more in temperament to a firemouth or convict). I am hoping to find a redish cichlid, or red and yellow. I am assuming salvini's are way too aggressive for this tank. Altho small I hear they are little monsters once they mature. I am hoping for my GT to take #1 in the hierarchy so that he plays the role of big peacekeeper.

Red terrors (proper name "festae") are too aggressive for your stock. Females reach 12" and males get to 14"-16". I would say their average temperament is greater than salvini, though I'm sure there are some that are calmer than salvini.

Salvini would also be too aggressive for your stock. Definitely little monsters when they reach their 5"-6" adult sizes. Rainbow cichlids are probably in the same ballpark as firemouths and convicts, but you have to realize that firemouths are all bark and little bite, while convicts are only nasty when breeding. And rainbows tend to be more of an orange color. They are generally only yellow when in breeding dress. You could do some Cryptoheros nanoluteus for yellow or some Thoricthys maculipinnis for a sparkling array of pink, red, yellow, and hues of purple.

So are rainbows more like convicts or are they more bark less bite? And thanks for the suggestion I really like the Cryptoheros nanoluteus and just hope 5" wouldn't be too small for the tank. The firemouth will be 6 but a semi aggressive 6. Would this guy have problems being the smallest guy in the tank. I'm tempted to try it and see what happens.

My point wasn't to categorize the rainbows as either firemouths or convicts, but to show that even convicts and firemouths can be quite shy. The rainbows are going to be 4-5" as well. Both them and the nanos will be pretty shy with larger fish around. The chocolate and heckelii won't tank crap from smaller fish unless being terrorized by a group. The GT could pose a problem for all the fish in the tank, but only if its aggressive. A 10" male will likely see fish half it's size as targets, so the smaller cichlids should be hardy enough to outrun the GT, but not overly aggressive enough to go after the chocolate or heckelii. Both the nanos and rainbows would likely be very shy. If they end up with a peacekeeper tempered GT, they should be okay. But if the GT ends up being a bully, they will likely remain in hiding all the time. Same goes for the firemouth. IME people don't realize how timid firemouths usually are. There are a few aggressive ones out there, but more often than not, they are pushovers. You can try it if you want. You might get lucky and find the perfect tempered rainbow, but in all likelihood, it will just be a fish you rarely see.

Thanks for clarifying. I am really hoping my GT is a peacekeeper over a bully, the entire tank almost depends on that. I have heard wild GTs tend to be crazy aggressive while tank raised tend to be less so, so I am really hoping he stays mild mannered and doesnt bother chasing anyone. ATM he seems exactly how I am hoping he will turn out. He swims the tank, usually up front, and is usually accompanied by the EBJD or acara, I have also noticed at night the GT and severum stick to the same corner, so he seems to get along fine with everyone. As for my firemouth, he is very fiesty. He doesn't tend to stay up front, when I feed he tends to swim off, but during the day he has ben very active. He seems the most territorial in the tank. Not really chasing fish off, but likes his spot. He is definitely the aggressor in the tank right now. I have seen him flare up quite a few times and although I have yet to see lip locking from him, he gets into back-downs with the other cichlids regularly. Especially with the acara, they back each other down a few times a week. So hopefully I got doubly lucky and my GT will be a large peacekeeper while my firemouth enjoys starting **** with the other fish (meaning not shy or timid). The other big toss up I risked (at least my LFS guys told me to keep on eye on this) was the GT and the acara. Luckily they seem to ignore each other. The first few days they seemed to stick close to each other and the acara followed the EBJD a lot too. Of all my fish, the severum seems the most timid and shy. I have never seen him back down anyone other than the firemouth once (the FM literally starts it with everyone, but even the EBJD backs him down) and he is usually hiding. But as I read on here, severums tend to be a shy fish until they reach the 5 inch mark. Perhaps the FM is a bit of a push over because he usually is the one to back away but he is also the one that starts it, everytime.

At such a small size I am tempted to try both, and if one is having problems, remove him. I like to hear what you said about the chocolate and the threadfin. I knew the heckelli was generally very peaceful, same with the chocolate, but I didnt know they are a fish that wont take crap. Thats good. The GT could be a bully, while my FM is the bully right now, its good to know that they 2 peaceful giants I want to add wont let the FM get the better of them. ATM my FM is sitting dead front and center of the tank watching me, lol. I dont think I would really call him timid.

Thanks for the response.

It's also really early to say exactly what will happen in your tank. Since most of your cichlids are still just babies, their personalities will grow with their bodies. The firemouth could become shy as it's tankmates outgrow it, the rivulatus could become a brute or remain calm, and the acara could even turn terrorizer. It's just a situation that needs to be monitored as the tank grows and the hierarchy shifts.

Also be careful of the rivulatus and the electric pulcher hooking up. They are if the same genus and could very likely spawn if they are opposite genders.
