Don't fire eels grow even larger than Ornates?

Books say Fire Eels can get 42"+. Tire Track 36". Peacock Eels around a foot.

My two are big wimps, they hide all the time and so far have never bothered the other polypterus or the AKF and ropes that share their tank. I don't even know how they are out growing the other species since they are usually the last to feed and so don't get as much of the food. A friend also has two and they are much more outgoing than mine but they don't seem to bother his other similar sized fish.

Mine is the exact same way. If I'm in the room he is in his cave. Sometimes when I get back from school I walk into my room and see him floating in the middle of the tank. If I try to walk up and admire it, it runs off to it's cave at breakneck speed. He's been with a senegal that is a full 2 and 1/2 inches smaller than him, and believe it or not he has actually retreated to his cave when the senegal whizzes by him.
