How many bio balls?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
do I need to buy more bioballs? The tank has been running for about a week-and-a-half now

You didn`t say anything about what is in the tank.
Are you fishless cycling?
Are you just running it for testing, to be sure all the mechanicals are doing their thing?
I`m sure there is a general formula for how much bio media supports "X" number of fish. Just not sure where it would be.
Without knowing what your stocking plans are, can`t really tell whether the media you have is enough or not.
BTW: Having a pick up truck load of Bio Media does not guarantee successful tank, right?

There are fish in the tank. I am using Seachem Stability to help cycle the tank. Here are my stocking plans:

1x Clown Knife
1x Gold Severum
1x Fire Eel
2x Datnoids
1x Jade Sleeper Goby
7x Clown Loaches
5x Silver Dollars
1x Leopard Ctenopoma
1x Ornate Bichir
1x Blood Red Parrot
1x Geophagus

I own all of these fish right now (just finished buying them this week) About half of them are in the 300g to help cycle it. This is my final stock after thinking about it with blood, sweat and tears.

Hold on, wait. You have a 300 gallon aquarium and a 75 gallon sump, for a total of 375 gallons, and you only bought enough bioballs for an 80 gallon tank? How do you plan on filtering the other 295 gallons? You need to have enough capacity for the entire tank, not just the volume in the sump.

For instance, I have 3 gallons worth of balls, just for my 75 gallon tank.

I can fit more bioballs in the sump. I was just wondering how the whole thing worked is all. The box said that the bio balls were enough for 80 gallons. I figured that since the sump was only 75 gallons, the box would be more than enough. I didn't know that I had to include the volume of water in the 300 when figuring this stuff out. I was at PetsMart and saw Biomax. Is that any good or should I continue looking for scrubbies? I don't know how many scrubbies I need, but I think the Biomax has instructions on it for how many to get based on gallonage.

The instructions say to put the biomax on top of the sponges. Is that a good idea? People on here told me that the water coming into the sump should hit the sponges BEFORE it hits the bioballs. Wouldn't the same thing apply to the biomax? I have in the first compartment a bunch of sponges with carbon on top. In the next compartment, I have the bioballs. In the next compartment, I have my titanium water heaters. In the bioball compartment, there is still space for more bioballs or other biomedia. Its just for me to get bioballs, I have to drive way out whereas the Petsmart down the street from me has biomax. I can probably get the potscrubbies/scouring pads at Walmart which is also closeby. If I get the biomax, does it have to go on top of the sponges or can I put it in the compartment with the bioballs and let them rest at the bottom of the tank?

FWIW - (1) litre of Matrix = 170 litre of bioballs
I've got (4) litres of Matrix in my 135gal aquarium canisters ($50)
which is roughly equivalent to 170 Gallons of bioballs

you have (1) box of bioballs for 375gal

Bio media overkill will never lead to a MEE (Mass Extinction Event)

Can the biomax ceramics be placed in the compartment with the bioballs and away from the sponges? I ask this since the directions on the biomax says to put the ceramics directly on top of the sponges. I'm not so sure that's wise as I would rather particles get caught in the sponges before clogging up the biomax, so I want to put the biomax in a different compartment.
