How many blue acaras and fire mouth cichlids in 200l tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah, I'm a little concerned about so many fire mouths though, i know they are mainly just bark, but what if they harass the acaras or gang up on them a little bit?

The dominant male firemouth will probably do a little chasing, but it's not a big deal. They shouldn't be persistent about it. Just make sure you spread the food around the tank when you feed to minimize it.

okidoke, thanks so much for all the advice, I'm really looking forward to keeping these fish

Personally I would keep one or the other.
Firemouths or any other thorichthys for that matter can come across as quite aggressive on first impressions. They puff out their gills and display to any intruder on their territory. In reality they are all bluff. They have quite fragile mouths that are very easily dislocated by other cichlids.
If the intruder falls for this, all front assault,a firemouth can keep on chasing and stressing out the other fish until it perishes.
A full grown pair of blue acara in breeding mode could quite easily do some damage to a firemouth if they chose to do so.
I would only normally advocate keeping thorichthys in tanks 4 foot or over.In this instance we are only 6 inches short of that recommendation, therefore it may be worth a try.
Like others have said firemouths are more peaceful in numbers.I would try a group of 6 with some livebearers or have a pair of acaras with some tetras and a few small catfish.
I would definitely not recommend mixing cichlids in a tank with that footprint. It's is a recipe for disaster.

I guess you're right, maybe a mix is too risky . I'm really torn between the two . I'm leaning towards the fire mouths. 6 of them would be more interesting than a pair of acaras. and for the livebearas, are there any you recommend? I'm guessing as long as the don't fit in their mouths they should be fine

A thorichthys species only tank is a very interesting tank to keep.
Lots of territorial displays, breeding behaviour and they are very attractive.
They will eat fish that are guppy sized so go for mollies, platy's,swordtails or the more peaceful goodieds. If you want an interesting not so often seen livebearer try the pike top livebearer.

brilliant, thanks for all the help, i prefer odd numbers of things, so i would most likely go for 5 fire mouths . the pike tops look cool too.

They are cool. Can be picky feeders when first introduced only taking live foods but do come round to frozen prepared foods eventually.
They are also biotope correct and found with firemouths in the wild.
I keep thorichthys myself and use swordtails with mine.

The tank above is 4 feet and housed 11 thorichthys and a shoal of swordtails.

Just incase you want to breed your firemouths,
Pike tops are very predatory, any meeki fry won't last long.
