How Many Clowns Is A Good School?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i would put no more tan 5 in that tank. When your Clowns settle in, they will out eat the discus, discus will starve and eventually stunt and die IMO.

I have a 42 strong school, and still wanting more ... I have 17 Large ones, the rest small to medium.
I feed A LOT.
Discus is too slow, you sting ray, i dont know we dont have those here. but i would assume they would try to munch clowns if they get a chance.

The clowns schooling is an awesome sight. I dont believe you can call it a school unless its 15+...

apart from space, whcih is a must
more importantly is filtration.
Imagine, i have 42 clowns in my tank, the tank is 1200Litres.
If i feed, 42 clowns will all digest food at the same time, so release of waste is a spike as opposed to a steady rate....
you will need good strong filtration.

I have 2x 1200Litres, sharing the same system.
THe system is 2x sump filters, 1x fluval 404, 3x fx5, 1x fluval 4 internal.'

The loaches should be in a minimum of 3 per school but more is usually better as long as they are not crowded

Good Luck!

I have 40 CL in my grow-out 125G BB tank with lots of driftwood and 20 plecos. At least 20 are over 6". It is WAY over filtered (2 - AC 110, 2260, 2 - 6" sponges, and a 100G sump pushing 7000 L/hr). The CLs and plecos love strong current ~ 3000 gph and play in it about half the day. The other half they rest hidden in the driftwood. I built the group at about 10 at a time and activity increased with each addition. At least twice a day they do there "happy dance" together and it's spectacular. I can't wait to get them in my 580G in about a month. I don't think you can ever have too many CL. The more the merrier!
