Hi I want to sart a convict colony .I am picking up a 33G tank and want to put convicts in it. I like convicts and have allways wanted to do a dedicated convict tank.
How many convicts can i keep in a 48"x12"x12" tank

probably a pair... they are mean sob's!
edit: actually its a 48 long tank so you might get away w/ 3 or 4 if you have enough hiding spaces.

I would say a few hundred every few months. 1 adult male and 1 adult female + there offspring untill they got large enough to be competition. And then after you remove the fry about 5 days of just the two and then a few more hundred.
Really if you are trying to do a convict only tank go for all females or go for convict and like species hrp, sajica etc. If you only had females I would say probably 3 or 4 maybee 5. With lots of hideing spots but if you get a male in there on accident all bets are off as I'm sure you know.

Well I have a pair in my 125G tank and want to move them into my 33G, I was hoping to add another pair of pink cons and let them have at it, at the lfs they have about 8 in a 20G tank .
I also thought about a all firemouth tank or a tank with firemouths and cons, I doubt I could find any hrp because they are usulaly sold as cons any way.

You could probably do that the two pairs but it wont be pretty. And one of the pairs will almost certainly be destroyed. But you will never know unless you try. Keep a close eye on it though. How big are they all?
