How many discus can I put in my 180 gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm aware there not like other fish I've had them before I've just never thought of putting them in a tank as big as this I usually use this tank as a grow out for predators but may change it up I'm not sure yet

to be honest if i were you and i could redo everything about discus i would go with 6 discus and maybe 12 dithers

I have 14 5+inch discus, 12 GBR, a few BN Plecos, and a school of 20+ Neon Tetra in my 180 gallon tank. They are all happy in there for the last 7-8 months.

But It takes forever to do WC for a tank that size.

When I use the python for WC, everybody is calm and alright, but it takes an hour or so to complete the task.

When I use a submersible pump for WC, they get spooked, and dart all over the place. I guess the noise and vibration from the pump scare them, but it will cut the time in a half.

I think any where between 12 to 15 discus is alright for the tank that size.

You can add 1 adult discus to 8 - 10 gallons of water. 20 discus will do fine. Min once a week water changes. Twice per week recommended.

I have had 50 6" penang Eruption Discus in a 125 gal. This was temporary for about 10 days. I use a 2gal/hr (48 gal/day) drip system on my 125's. I also do 50% wc daily on top of that when tanks are heavily stocked.

I currently have 21 6" Super Eruptions in the 125gal At 50% water level. about 75 gals of water. With a 48 gal/day fresh water drip. They can be seen at www.centralohiodiscus.com

Definitely agree with the 1 adult to 10 gallons general rule. Obviously you can increase the quantity depending on WC schedule or quality of filtration.
