How Many Discus Could I Add?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thanks guys those are some great looking discus, and yeah i would definitely siphon the sand out of the 20g and make it a bare bottom while i was growing them out. and you guys think 6 would be ok as far as bioload? im used to keeping the big CA brutes so im used to thinking of bioload on their terms and i know with them 11 6in cichlids would be way over stocked but with discus and angels would that still be ok and stay clean enough to keep with my current water change schedule.

and aquanero, you think with just the angels and tetras that they would have a hard time getting food?

You never know, the Tetras don't matter but sometimes the Angels will pester the hell out of Discus, they are more agressive eaters but once full they should let the Discus eat. Some Angels can be real son of a guns in a mixed tank especially if they are the top dogs. If you had the option I would go bigger Discus in the tank 1st and then smaller Angels added later. But I will say if stocked correctly in a 120 it should be ok.

I would be weary of adding the angels IMO. I had to monitor the original crew I had in the tank that I moved the discus to. I kept a super red sev. bc he has had eye issues since birth, and it makes him very... well different. He couldn't hold his own against a one eyed green sev, and is very.. special lol. Smart, but special. But I had to move out my festivum who became to "picky", and a few others that I saw made them uncomfortable. But even with the IDs pacing the tank, they were always in the open. Judging on the tempermant of my angel I used to keep, you would be much more pleased with just Discus. They are amazing to watch glide. To watch them get picked on (especially at their price) pisses me off. Not to say that any fish getting picked does the same, but with cichlids, saltwater fish etc, I give more time due to their nature. But discus, hell no. One night it was either run to Petsmart and get a breeder box to store, or a bucket, or tossing him in the street. :D Petsmart run in the end. LFS last stop (next day).

well i already have the angels and i just got them, and they are wild caught specimens that i really like so they are definitely not going anywhere, they seem very even tempered with only a couple nips from the largest one here or there but really not anything to worry about, but i would grow out the discus to at least 3in if not larger before adding them to the tank, i thought angels were supposed to go well with discus? if they would really be an issue then i just wouldnt get the discus but i thought it would be a very nice tank if i could have them together

Yeah IDK maybe you should not try doing the Discus with the Angels it's just too much money to risk a fail. It's not my doller menue Tiger Barbs!

like others said, grow out the discus then put them in the show tank. saves money on the water, dont have to worry about them getting bully or no food. if you have no patients i would suggest getting big discus to start off with like 4 inches or larger ones. and discus can go along with angels. atleast for me, i have my albino's with altums and everyones happy. and if you try discus i would suggest getting ones that you know your gonna keep for awhile. cuz theres so many strains out there you might get bored and want other strains. but have fun, discus arent as hard as people say it is. atleast to me.

yeah there is actually a professor at my school that breeds them as his hobby, so if i did get them i would be getting them from him but im still not sure how much he is wanting for them but im sure it will be cheaper than ordering them but yeah still a lot of money to risk it not working and my angels picking on them, i thought angels and discus were about the same temperament but i guess from what you all are saying they are even more timid than angels
