Setting up a 90g tank. I have an RO/DI and I'm considering doing either altums or discus. How many of each could I do in a 90g?

Are these guys really as hard to keep as I've heard?

Not real hard but they do need a little more attention then typical fish. What are the dimensions of the 90g?

Not sure about Altums but you could keep 7-8 Adult Discus for life in there.

As for them being really hard to keep, no they're not. They are just high maintenance(Lots of water changes). If you aren't looking to do water changes every couple days, go with Angelfish lol

Discus I'd say 5-6 personally. Never kept altums, but they get BIG, very tall bodied, so keep that in mind. Discus aren't hard to keep, but you're fooling yourself if you think they're as easy to keep as a typical cichlid. In all my years of fishkeeping I've never been so challenged until I started keeping discus, and not mention the countless medications I've had to use. They can come down with internal parasites if you blink for too long.

48 1/2 x 18 1/2 x 25 3/8

I think i'm more interested in wild scalare or altums than discus. I'm considering some other things too. I'm just trying to do my research before I stock.

if it is 25 tall that would be a good tank for altums as they grow so large vertically. That would be my pick. I personally would try to get f1 altums as they will have already adapted to tank life. some altums are hard to switch off of live food

I've yet to see any tank-bred Altums that actually look like Altums. They look really ugly, with broken and crooked bars. If you go with Altums, I'd buy them from somebody whose had them in captivity for a while. They are delicate fish and don't transition to tank life easily.
