My question is how many fish from 3"-5" with two 8" can be held in a 55 gal tank and if possible for how short of a period can they be kept in it??? I understand that it is probably beyond the limit and is insane bc of all the bioload and such and that an upgrade of the tank is necessary....

BUMP!!!

anyone???

depends on how much filtartion and water changes your doing.. and what species your keeping in the tank.... all of these factor into how long or how well it might work.

LOL.... i know its probably a joke for some and a serious issue for some but i currently have 5 pb from 2" to 6" and 2 rtc from 7"-8.5" along with 2 sterlet sturgeon and 1 pleco...i do 30-50 % water change 1-3x a week....i am currently on the look out for an opportunity to get a bigger tank within 1-2 months from now bc we recently moved into a new home...and its pretty crowded...

I have 7 pBass (4"-5"), 1 Silver Aro (8"), 1 flagtail (5") and a fire eel (12") in my 65g. I have an external filter, nothing extra powerful though. I do water changes twice a week, 60% change each time.
My tank doesn't look crowded still. It will when the pBass add couple more inches though. My target was to move to a bigger tank when the Aro hits 14" size, but my 220g is in the process and should be ready in 3 weeks time.

I also did not do fishless cycling for my tank. I put the fish in the same day I bought the tank. Continued with 30% water changes once in two days for few weeks and now settled in to twice a week.

awww ic...thanks then i think i might be okay with one for two more around those size...xD trying not to over do it though...fish you guys see that there might be a problem lmk...i wouldnt want to wake up one morning and yeah...you know the story...xD

I think most of the time you'll see if your tank is too crowded when you observe it and see their behavior. Maintaining the water quality is the most important I think.

For example, my silver Aro was 5" when I got him, put him in a 2'X1'X1' tank initially. He was okay there for a while,I thought I should be able to keep him there until he is 8". But by the time he hit 6" it was clearly showing the signs that he is not happy with the limits. So I moved him to the 65g. Saw a big difference in his behavior once he got in to the bigger tank. Much more calm, doesn't get spooked that easily etc.

thanks for the advise ill keep an eye out...ill also keep in touch...

Loaded question to say the least. But I'll give you an idea of what I had in a 55 at one time.

70 Tiger Barbs of differing color
2 Red Tail Sharks
Several small plecos, no idea what they were.

This tank thrived for over two years until I went on vacation and my house was broken into and vandalized.

That being said, my filtration.

2 modified Emperor 400s
2 Fluval 405s
Several Maxi Jet 1200s

I did 40% WC weekly. And cleaned the sponges on the MaxiJets every other day.
