So I am planning to get rid of my JDs as they have become rather aggressive and are starting to put on some length. They still have PLENTY of room as they are both only around 4", but I have decided to take the tank a different route with a small school of Firemouths. I have always had a love for these fish and I know they will only reach around 6", so I figure when they're about an inch long, I could possibly get 5 or 6, then start to sell them off to friends as they reach their maximum size. So my question is, how many small FMs would be desirable for a 55g tank?

i would do about 5-6

That's what I figured. Also, what would be an optimal environment as far as aesthetics in the tank go? Right now I have PFS as a substrate, lots of medium sized rocks, and about 5 fake plants.

that sounds good. I'd go with 6-8 firemouths...they thrive in groups as juveniles. I'd also add some livebearers of some sort and maybe a couple of floating plants. the extra cover will give the livebearer fry to hide and will also provide some cover and between that and the livebearers the firemouths should feel very safe. :)

Thats sounds real cool man. A school of FM's.

Just got them a few hours ago and they have already seemed to take a liking to their new, exponentially bigger habitat. :D I also got a con, which is about an inch long as my girlfriend wanted to pick out a fish. Women... All of the FMs are around 1.5", so I'm excited to see their progress.

cool man good luck

how many FM could you keep for life in a 55?

Oh, cool. I can almost guarantee you'll get firemouthxconvict fry at some point. They are actually really pretty.

that all depends on how well they get along and how dedicated you are to maintaining water conditions. I think 2 pairs would probably be fine and depending on how well they get on you might be able to do 3.
