How many FMs for a 55g?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I bought four firemouths awhile back hoping to get a breeding pair. I did, within a few months. The male was 2" and the female at 1.5" when they first spawned. Once they did they made life miserable for the other two, I couldn't keep them in the same tank. This was a heavily decorated 55. Lots of driftwood, broken pots, and caves.

I'm not saying my results happen everytime, but I wanted to give you a heads up.

If I see any major aggression, I'll be sure to divide them up. Once I buy my 125, I don't see too many issues arising from 6 FMs, or even a few more if I decide to get some. Right now they're all doing great and seem to be loving the set up I have going for them. Lots of hiding spots and they love sifting through the sand. They're very entertaining to watch, even at such a small size.

Here's some Blackberry quality photos for now:

I have found FM and most Thorichthys to be pretty aggressive, especially if they are alpha in the tank. They also dont like their own kind at all. I dout a group will work, and as stated a breeding pair will own that tank.

GL though...Bill

I can almost guarantee you'll get firemouthxconvict fry at some point. They are actually really pretty.

Looks like a male con and I'm pretty sure I saw a female firemouth but not totally positive. I have a love/hate relationship with hybrids. I believe it's alright as long as you don't pollute the bloodlines. By that I mean sell them as hybrids or not at all. Preferably not at all. But con+FM hybrids are very nice and have great color.

Man i wanna get some small babies to grow now.

Nice tank!

Definitely a female con. You can't tell with my 2.0mp camera, but it has the orange and greens of a female.

WOW - reading the begining of this thread would suggest Firemouths Shoal, this a complete misconception, they are very aggessive, most esp. to their own kind. 55 gal 1 Male, 1 Female for life if your lucky.
