Hi there, trying to figure out how many pairs of breeding cons I could realistically keep in a 55 long? Id like to know how many full grown cons I could keep specifically, because I am not interested in looking for new homes for the fish at their full size. Would it be a good idea to divide the tank or is it best left open? Any other species that might work well in that sort of setup? We are looking to breed for feeders, nothing else.

Thanks in advance!

to be honest 4 might be pushing it, and if breeding pairs there would be a hall of an aggression level, though if i were you and say i went for three i think a breeding pair of white cons, a breeding pair of normal cons and a breeding pair of black cons.

Two breeding pairs primarily because of aggression. If they were same gender, I would have 6-8 male cons, or 8-10 female cons.

convicts as feeders is not the best idea, I had a breeding pair in my 75 that I took out and left the fry and there are still some, and they were sea monkey sized, now they are about 1/2 inch.so I would say just go with all one gender, becasue they will overcrowd your tank no matter what.My friend left his tank with his rents and he came back to like 50 convicts in it. Unless you want to feed them to like saltwater fish so they can't swim away as fast, I woudn't reccommend convicts as feeders honestly, just get a handful of males.

i am going to use mine as feeders. i mean i know it takes them awhile to get big enough and they dont have big spawns...but when they do they get eaten and i see it as a day or so of free food for my dovii's. and, if they survive in the dovii tank then they are some bada** cons and ill sell them or keep them.

If you have a lot of cover and sight brakers then you should be able to get away with 3 pairs.

I was able to successfully do 2 breeding pairs with a school of tiger barbs in a 55g.

I also attempted 3 breeding pairs in a 75g, once two of the pairs had young the third pair was not able to keep their territory. If you atempt 3 pair in a 55g, the tank will be divided by the two stronger pairs with the third pair being religated to the top corners of the tank, if not killed.

I havent had any problems using con fry as feeders thus far. We are careful about how they are fed to our fish and thus far none have survived. If we end up somehow with slightly larger con here and there well.. we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. I don't expect it to ever happen, but if it does Im sure the lfs would take it for free.
